karahayit

December 26th, 2008 admin No comments

Karahayit (kah-RAH-hah-yuht), the village north of Pamukkale, was once known for its rust-red hot mineral waters, filled with iron and calcium. In the 1990s, when the motels atop the Pamukkale plateau were removed, Karahayit became the place selected for development of large luxury spa hotels. The triumphal entry gate on the wide access road to Karahayit is a monument to the hope that Turkish and foreign visitors in search of health and happiness would come to Karahayit and stay at the luxury spa hotels for a week or two, taking the “cure.” Too many hotels were built, too few spa visitors arrived, and now Karahayit’s five-star hotels host mostly bus tour groups for one-night stays. The oversupply of hotel rooms is so bad that many very comfortable hotels advertise room, buffet breakfast and buffet dinner for YTL35 (US$23) per person, an indisputable bargain. The catch? Public transport to the hotels is infrequent or inconvenient or non-existant, so you must have your own transport to benefit from these special prices. The hotels offer many other services at additional cost: drinks, massages, shops, etc.

Travel to Pamukkale & Visa Requirements
Flights and airtickets to Pamukkale
Closest airport is Denizli – Cardak Airport is 65 km or 1 hour away and there are flights twice daily to Istanbul.
Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is another alternative to the area. Pamukkale is 252 km from the airport, a drive of about 4 hours (4-1/2 to 5 hours by bus)or 6-7 hours by train. (Check TCDD [1] for train schedule.)
By train

There are trains to/from Izmir, Ankara and Istanbul. (The Pamukkale Express has been cancelled in Summer 2008 due to track repairs. No train between Denizli and Istanbul this means!)
Buses to Pamukkale

Bus to Pamukkale/Denizli can be found from almost all the cities of Turkey. There are virtually no bus companies that take you directly to Pamukkale despite what the ticket sellers tell you. The bus will drop you in Denizli and then you have to catch the local dolmus to Pamukkale (about 20 km away).
By dolmus

Take a dolmus, a type of cheap communal taxi usually seating about 10 persons (but it’s possible they’ll squeeze in more), from nearby Denizli. Frequent mini-buses serve the village of Pamukkale in a 20 minute ride.
Tours & Getting around Pamukkale

Even when you’re way on the edge of the village, you can reach everything (the village center and the travertine pools) on foot in about ten to fifteen minutes.
Pamukkale attractions and sightseeing
The petrified waterfalls/travertine are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are a beautiful sight. More pictures and videos of this magnificent view here [2]
The 12,000 seat Roman theater of Hierapolis should not be missed.
Another lesser known site, but one that holds a considerable significance Biblically is Laodikya, just 10 minutes from Pamukkale on the Denizli road. It’s mentioned in the Bible as one of the 7 Churches of the Revelations and even though it hasn’t been reconstructed as much as the more famous sites like Ephesus, is a great place to experience the Roman history without the crowds.
Karahyit, the red spring is also 5 minutes from Pamukkale, not as big as the calcium outcrop, but worth a look.
Kaklik caves are like a small version of Pamukkale, but in a cave, underground and are about 30 minutes from Pamukkale.
Culture and History
Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish
The springs have been used as a spa since the second century BC.

The travertine features have their origins in the shifting of a fault in the valley of the Menderes river (between here and Denizli). As the fault shifted, very hot springs with a very high mineral content (notably chalk) arose at this location. Apart from the slightly radioactive minerals, the calcium and hydrogen carbonate react to create calcium carbonate (also known as travertine) and limestone. This is what gives Pamukkale it’s whiteness and created the pools.
Pamukkale city tours
You can walk down barefooted in the waterfalls from the village on top. The place is crowded when the tour-buses arrive.
If you stay at one of the small pensions they might give you a tour of the ruins and travertines at night.
It is worth seeing the remains of the ancient city of Aphrodisias. You can rent a van from Denizli to get there. Or the local hotels run tours for approx 25 lira.
Also there are thermal baths at the top of the travertine pools and the ancient city of Hierapolis with a great Amphytheatre.
Of moderate interest might be Denizli it’s a bit dull but there’s a lively market.
Loadikya is another less visited ruin site only 10 km from Pamukkale on the local dolmus, entrance is free and there are usually few tourists there. Peaceful way to spend a day looking at ruins but also the beautiful scenery there as well.
Pamukkale souvenirs & shopping

The Pamukkale/Denizli area is famous for its cotton and the homewares. These are becoming sought after world wide (Arnold Schwartzenegger decked out his house in curtains and furnishings specially made in Denizli – so the story goes!) and the best place to go is the town of Buldan, about 30 minutes drive from Pamukkale. Many of the other souvenirs and traditional Turkish wares that you can find in other parts of Turkey are cheaper around Denizli/Pamukkale because they are produced there.
Pamukkale Restaurants: cheap, moderate and expensive

The best and freshest food is to be found in the small family run pensions, but for a great open air restaurant where you can eat ‘borek’ the Turkish pancakes and gaze across the valley, try Alis on the main highway just before you come into the town.
Mehmets Heaven, on the main street near the Travertines has an excellent view of Pamukkale from his porch out back. Great food and well priced. Super nice owner as well.
Pamukkale nightlife, bars, clubs & pubs
You should try Turkish national drink called Ayran, which is very healthy. It is an aquired taste though. The wines produced in the Pamukkale area are becoming quite famous and are winning awards for the quality and standard.
Raki!! or lion’s milk as it is known, again an acquired taste. Great with fish or any long meal as it is meant toopen your appetite.
Pamukkale cheap and luxurious hotels, youth hostels & lodging

There are small family-run pensions at the village south of the travertines. Most have swimming-pools filled with the warm greenish milky water from the travertines. They also offer very delicious Turkish food.
Melrose Allgau Hotel is a nice family-run pansiyon at the eastern end of town with nice rooms for about 32 YTL and upwards. The friendly owners serve cheap but tasty home cooked meals. There’s a laundry service and a pool filled with spring water. They also used to allow campers to put up their tents.
Artemis Yoruk Hotel Great location, right in the centre of town and just opposite the bus stop. Great range of rooms, dorm, single, double, triple and family. Price included breakfast. HUGE pool and nice garden, great for relaxing. Traditional Turkish food served all day and night on the rooftop terrace. Owners very helpful and very attentive (fluent English). Lots of tour information including Afrodisias, Laodikya, book exchange, free internet.
Venus Hotel is a comfortable, popular choice with single, double, triple, quad and five person rooms that have been newly renovated and are available for very reasonable prices. There is also wireless internet connection, a swimming pool filled with the famous Pamukkale water and a restaurant where the hotel’s guests and other visitors from all around the town get to try traditional home cooked Turkish meals and local wines. They also provide travel services and information and have fluent English speaking staff.
Melrose Residence House Hotel Pamukkale (Hierapolis) is situated on the south west of Turkey’s Anatolian peninsula. One of the most familiar images of Turkey is the gleaming-white calcium formations (travertine pools) of Pamukkale in Turkey. In this beautiful region the Melrose Residence House Hotel is located.
Four Seasons Pamukkale Hotel Come to you feel at home, Hotel Dort Mevsim Easily the best place you will stay in Pamukkale. Great value cheap, clean room, nice bathroom, great food and friendly our staff enjoyable!
Ozturk White Hill Hotel One of Pamukkale’s best-loved hostels – as it is consistently rated one of the top hostels in the country. We’re a small family-owned and run hostel with a homey atmosphere – the perfect place to relax and enjoy your time in Pamukkale.

Denizli

Situated in the inner part of the Aegean Region, is Denizli, a tourist attraction city with its numerous beauty.

Dating back to the Calcholithic age, this was the site of a settlement of the earliest communities, and changed hands continuously, becoming the center of various civilizations in different time periods.

The ancient city of Laodikeia is here, with its ruins awaiting for the sightseers in addition to Triopolis which was known as the center of bishops, while Christianity spread. Laodikeia was one of the Seven Churches mentioned in the book of Revelations. The city is still the subject of excavations.

Hierapolis is another ancient city, being a historical treasure, while it also offers a real wonder of nature. Named as “Pamukkale” (meaning Cotton Castle in Turkish) this place is astonishingly beautiful, and unique in the world with its white travertine offering marvelous scenery.

The wide forests and numerous picnicking and camping areas here contribute to this natural and archaeological richness, while its position as a stopover between the major provinces like Izmir, Ankara and Antalya, increases the tourist attraction of Denizli. The thermal resorts also attract visitors to the provinces with their spring waters of therapeutic effects; Gemezli, Cezmeli, Tekke and Kizildere are the main spa resorts, besides the thermal centers of Pamukkale and Karahayit.
Denizli Roosters

“Denizli Rooster”, the symbol of Denizli is a domestic species which is well known all over Turkey with its color and body building, harmonious long and beautiful crowing. According to some rumors, Berat roosters having long crowing were brought to Istanbul during Ottoman Empire from Albania and then brought to Denizli and crossbred with domestic local chicken and thus Denizli Rooster species were originated. Probabily this is not true because there are no similarities between the two species when compared in terms of color and body structure. Denizli rooster was probabily originated upon great care shown by the local people to long crowing rooster for centuries.

Denizli rooster’s eyes are black and blackened with kohl. Its legs are dark grey or purple, its comb is in big axe comb, and atrium is red or white spots on red background; general color is black and dirty white together. Sometimes wing features have brown colors as well. Red roosters have black-white mixture. Their live weight is about 3-3.5 kgs (7 pounds). They are divided into 3 groups according to their colors, body building and comb types. According to their colors they are classified into 6 groups as: Demirkir (iron), Pamukkir (cotton), Kinali (henna), Al (red), Siyah (black) and Kurklu (with fur). According to their body shape they are divided into 3 types: Yuksek Boyun (high neck), Sulun (fasan) and Kupeli (with earings). According to their combs, they are divided into 2 types: Genis Ibik (big comb) and Dar Ibik (small comb).

The sound of Denizli roosters are classified according to the tone and clearness. According to sound tones they are divided into 3 groups: Ince (low), Davudi (bass), Kalin (high). Davudi voice is between high pitched and deep voice and is the only sound close to deep voice. According to clearness, they are divided into 4 groups: sad voice, shrill voice, wavy voice (funny voice).

Crowing of Denizli roosters is performed upon use of all abilities. Crowing is divided into 4 groups depending on body position during crowing, which are Lion crowing, Wolf crowing, Hero crowing, Pus crowing.

A good Denizli Rooster must have: alive appearance; long and strong legs and neck; wide and deep chest; sharp and sloped toward head tail. The same features are true for the chicken. The crowing period of Denizli Roosters in the first year must be 20 to 25 seconds.

Breeding roosters are selected under the control of Directorate of Province Agricultural Affairs and the rest are sold according to the demands made from various parts of the country between March – April, and sales of chicks are made between March – June.

mugla about

December 20th, 2008 admin No comments

Mugla is a province of Turkey, as the country’s south-western corner, on the Aegean Sea. Its seat is Mugla, about 20 km (12 miles) inland, while some of Turkey’s largest holiday resorts, such as Bodrum, Oludeniz, Marmaris and Fethiye, are on the coast in Mugla.

Modern Mugla

A sleepy town of 20,000 until recently, disregarded by visitors rushing to its coastal resorts, Mugla has seen been given a new breath of life with the founding of Mugla University in the 1990s. Today the university boasts a 16,000-strong student community, which opened has the city to the outside (including international) world. Also in recent years a large programme of restoration of the city’s architectural heritage has enhanced local tourism.
History

In ancient times in Anatolia, the region between the Menderes (Meander) and Dalaman (Indus) rivers in the south was called Caria. The inhabitants were Carians and Leleges. In his Iliad, Homer describes the Carians as natives of Anatolia, defending their country against Greeks in joint campaigns in collaboration with the Trojans.

A major city of ancient Caria, Mugla is known to have been occupied by raiding parties of Egyptians, Assyrians and Scythians, until eventually the area was settled by Ancient Greek colonists. The Greeks inhabited this coast for a long time building prominent cities, such as Knidos (at the end of the Datça Peninsula and Bodrum (Halicarnassos), as well as many smaller towns along the coast, on the Bodrum Peninsula and inland, including in the district of Fethiye the cities of Telmessos, Xanthos, Patara and Tlos. Eventually the coast was conquered by Persians who were in turn removed by Alexander the Great, bringing an end to the satrapy of Caria.

In 1261 CE, Menteşe Bey, founder of the Beylik (principality) that carried his name, with its capital in Milas, established his rule over the region of Mugla as well. The beys of Menteşe held the city until 1390 and this, the first Turkish state in the region, achieved a high level of cultural development, its buildings remaining to this day. The province also became a significant naval power, trading with the Aegean Islands, Crete and as far as Venice and Egypt. Turkish settlement during the Menteşe period usually took place through migrations along the Kütahya-Tavas axis.

In 1390, Mugla was taken over by the Ottoman Empire. However, just twelve years later, Tamerlane and his forces defeated the Ottomans in the Battle of Ankara, and returned control of the region to its former rulers, the Menteşe Beys, as he did for other Anatolian Turkish Beyliks. Mugla was brought back under Ottoman control by Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, in 1451. One of the most important events in the area during the Ottoman period was the well-recorded campaign of Süleyman the Magnificent against Rhodes, which was launched from Marmaris.

With this long history Mugla is rich in ancient ruins, with over 100 excavated sites including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Letoon, near Fethiye.

Places of interest

Although it is so close to the major resorts Mugla has only recently begun to attract visitors itself. Sights of interest in the town include

* the Ottoman Empire-era bazaar (Arasta) – marked by a clock tower built by a Greek craftsman named Filivari Usta in 1895,
* Kurşunlu Cami – a large mosque built in 1495
* Vakıflar Hamam – a Turkish bath which dates back to 1258.
* The old quarter of Muğla – on the slopes and around Saburhane Square (Meydanı), consisting of about four hundred registered old houses dating from the 18th century and the 19th century, many of which are restored. These houses are mainly in the Turkish style characterized with hayat sections (“courts”) entered through double-shuttered doors called kuzulu kapı (“lamb doors”) and dotted with chimneys typical of Muğla, but there are also a number of “Greek” houses. The differences between the two types of houses may have as much to do with the extent to which wood or stone were used in their architecture, and whether they were arranged in intraverted or extraverted styles, as with who inhabited them previously.
* Muğla City Museum – has a good collection of archaeological and ethnographical artefacts, as well as 9 million years old animal and plant fossiles recently discovered in Kaklıcatepe nearby.

The city is also home to Muğla University. The local football club, Muğlaspor currently apply their trade in the third tier of the Turkish football pyramid.
Geography

At 1,100 km (683 miles), Mugla’s coastline is the longest among the Provinces of Turkey and longer than many coutries’ costlines, (even without taking any small islands into account). As well as the sea, Mugla has two large lakes, Lake Bafa in the district of Milas and Lake Köyceğiz. The landscape consists of pot-shaped small plains surrounded by mountains, formed by depressions in the Neogene. These include the plain of the city of Mugla itself, Yeşilyurt, Ula,Gulagzi , Yerkesik, Akkaya, Çamköy and Yenice). Until the recent building of highways, transport from these plains to either the coast or inland was quite arduous, and thus each locality remained an isolated culture of its own. Contact with the outside world was through one of the three difficult passes: northwest to Milas, north to the Menderes plain through Gökbel, or northeast to Tavas.

The economy of Mugla relies mainly on tourism (on the coast), and agriculture, forestry and marble quarries inland.

Agriculture in Mugla is rich and varied; the province is one of Turkey’s largest producers of honey, pine-forest honey in particular and citrus fruits are grown in Ortaca, Fethiye, Dalaman and Dalyan.

The province is the second center of marble industry in Turkey after Afyonkarahisar in terms of quantity, variety and quality. Other mineral exploitation includes coal-mining in Yatağan and chrome in Fethiye. Other industry in the province includes the SEKA paper mill in Dalaman and the power stations at Yatağan, Yeniköy and Kemerköy. However Mugla is by no means an industrialised province.
Transportation

The following are aspects about transportation in Mugla province:

* There are two airports in Dalaman and Milas-Bodrum, serving domestic and international flights and catering to the tourism industry.
* There are yacht marinas in Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Güllük.
* There are many privately-run bus connections to Izmir, Antalya, Ankara, Istanbul and other major cities in Turkey from Mugla and directly from the coastal resorts.

Alanya

December 19th, 2008 gizem No comments

Alanya is one of the best holiday places in Antalya in Turkey. The hotels in Alanya are very comfortable , also they are the places as the heaven where the sunset and the sunrise are watched.

Most of the hotels in Alanya are near the beaches.Watching the opposite islands through the balconies gives joy, and going to the beach gives effect to the vacation. The hotels which are in walking-distance from shopping and entertainment centers, gives opportunity to taste unorthodox flavours in cafes, bars and restaurants. They are in service throughout the entire year with their friendly and high-quality service, warm and comfortable atmosphere. Most of them take it as principle to accomodate their guests the best way with their private beaches and docks. The menus of the hotels include Aegean and Mediterranean foods. The hotels which have adopted n principle the sense of VIP service , have a beach , formed a lot of little docks and sand beaches, and the sea ground is also sand. They offer the ideal atmosphere to get the utmost enjoyment of the sun and the sea , accompanied by a sweet northwest wind across the islands, and to have a good time with ice colg beverages and snacks at the beach all they long.

That hotels have only one mission: To be able to send their guests back to their houses with a smile on their faces. And, of course they make this mission succesfully so much … :)
